In 1851 TePaea married Koroneho Tehakiroe and it is believed they had about 14 children. Her second marriage in 1870 was to Hori Taiawhio in 1870 and they had three children.
As she was bilingual she was able to act as a guide at the pink and white hydrothermal terraces in Rotorua, which was New Zealand's most famous tourist attraction, and she was known as 'Guide Sophia'. Very sadly the pink and white terraces were lost when Mount Tarawera erupted in 1886.
Sophia then moved to Whakarewarewa where she continued her guiding work, and guided several royal parties through the Whakarewarewa historic village and thermal reserve.
In 1896 she was appointed the caretaker of Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and and it is there that she died on the 4th of December 1911 and where she is buried.Marriage (1): 1851, Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand to Neho Paratene (1810–1869).
