Bio by Vy Whitaker:
Addie Vioma Conaway was born in a 'Dug-Out' near Leedey (Trail), Oklahoma on 7 Jul 1912, she was delivered by a mid-wife; she was the second daughter of George Aquilla Conaway and Minnie Mae Forsythe. The homesteaded farm where they lived was acquired in the "Oklahoma Land Run" by her parents (This area was known as "Trail"). There were six siblings, each was given a nickname by Quiller, Dee was "Sprout", Ivy was "June Bug", Addie was "Frog", Annie was "Dick", Mary was "Mutt", and Hettie was "Jeff". The whole family worked hard on the farm, working in the fields; pulling broomcorn was one of their chores. Their first home was a "lean-to".

Addie Conaway married Silas Benback on 29 Aug 1930 in Fairview, OK; in about 1937 they moved to Bayard, near Silver City, New Mexico following Silas' work. He was employed by the railroad that serviced the Santa Rita Mines in NM. In 1932 she and Silas had a daughter, Norma Jean Benback, born in OK. Tragically Silas was killed in NM in an automobile accident while in transit to work when Norma Jean was only about five & 1/2 years old.

Addie & Norma Jean returned to Leedy, Oklahoma following Silas' death and lived in a house that was attached to Addie's parents' house.

Addie married Lawrence Charles Whitaker on 6 Jun 1940 in Waynoka, OK. They had four children together. Three daughters and one son, Kenneth Charles was stillborn on 19 Dec 1951; he is buried in Muskogee, Muskogee County, OK, at the Greenhill Cemetery. They divorced in 1965.

In 1975 Addie moved with her last Daughter, Jan, back to Oklahoma, there she rekindled her childhood relationship with Elmer Everett "Bus" Graham; she married him on 3 May 1976 in Sayre, OK. Unfortunately this relationship did not last and she returned to AZ.

Addie spent the last ten years of her life in nursing homes in Arizona; most of this time she was unable to walk due to complications of a car accident. Addie Conaway died in Scottsdale, AZ on Flag Day, June 14, 1992. She was cremated, and the ashes were buried in the New Hermon Cemetery near Leedey, OK next to her first husband, Silas Benback. Addie & Silas only child, Norma Jean Benback-Siegenthaler was buried next to them in 2002.
