Harriet Susan Taylor was the 2nd child of Captain Howell Taylor, Jr. and Mary Pettus Venable. Harriet married her 1st cousin, Robert Howell Taylor, in Dec 1838. Their fathers were brothers.

Harriet and Robert had six children:
1. Mary Venable Taylor (1840-1857), died as a teen
2. Nancy Alexander "Nannie" Taylor (1842-1903), never married
3. Roberta "Berta" Taylor (1845-1911) m. Richard Vernon Mann (1841-1916)
4. James Madison Taylor (1847-1878) m. Sallie Perkins Marr (1852-1931)
5. Henrietta A. "Henrie" Taylor (1850-1923) m. Ben M. Bradford (1845-1926)
6. Joseph R. Taylor (1851-1866) burned in his father's house, died age 15.
