"Mrs. Jane P. Merritt Wilcoxen, wife of Hon. Gilbert Wilcoxen, died about seven o’clock Sunday evening at the family residence on Cayuga Street. Mrs. Wilcoxen some time since experienced an attack of pneumonia, from the effects of which she never entirely recovered. She gradually grew weaker, until heart failure ended her sufferings. She was a daughter of the late William P. Merritt, and was born in the year 1830, in the town of Bedford, Westchester County, this state. Her marriage with Mr. Wilcoxen took place in 1859 and since then she has resided in this village Her married life was of the happiest character and as a Christian motber and wife she exemplified those rare and excellent qualities of heart and mind, that endeared her to her family, friends and acquaintances. Early in life she united with the Baptist church, later becoming connected with the Presbyterian church, and was always active and zealous in church work, until compelled to cease from the labors she loved. She was a woman of rare culture and refinement, faithful and devoted to all the duties of life, ever thoughtful and considerate of those around her, patient in suffering and enduring in her attachments. She leaves surviving beside her husband, two sons, William M. Wilcoxen of DesMoines, Iowa, and Fred G. Wilcoxen of this village; also two brothers, Abram Merritt of Jackson, Michigan, and George F. Merritt of Albion, Michigan. The funeral service was held at her late home Wednesday afternoon, at half past two o’clock, Rev. H. Grant Person and Rev. W . B. Clarke officiating."
