CHARLES HERGERT IS CLAIMED BY DEATH
WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF TOWN OF WITTENBERG SUCCUMBS AFTER STROKE LAST YEAR

Charles Hergert, whose home was a few miles northeast of town and who had lived in this community for a long time, died last Sunday following about a year's illness or incapacity that came upon him as the result of a stroke.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon. Rev. E.D. Allen, pastor of the M.S. church, conducted the services at the home and at the church in this village. Burial took place in Forest Home cemetery. The pallbearers were Louis Schulz, B. Thomas, Chas. Maahs, Oliver Pike, Chas. Wendt and Mr. Harning.

Mr. Hergert was born in New York State on June 16, 1855. Forty six years ago he was married to Mary Elizabeth Stevens, Of Jonesville, Michigan. About 45 years ago he came to the town of Pella in this county, making the trip with horses and wagons. They moved to the town of Wittenberg 18 years ago. At one time he taught school in the town of Seneca, His chief occupation was the drilling of wells. He was an omnivorous reader and was well posted on current affairs.

Twelve children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Hergert, all but three of whom are living; they are, Ovitt of Galena, Ill.; Henry of Barronnette; Jesse of Sheply; Nettie (Mrs. John Cronce) of Mattoon; Margie (Mrs. Archie Long) of Ladysmith; Phoebe (Mrs. Ted Tyrrell) of Mattoon; James of Prairie du Chien; Ruth (Mrs. Jack Ole) of St. Paul, with whom Mrs. Hergert is now making her home, and Bessie (Mrs. Del Peck) of Ladysmith.

The decedent also leaves 46 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, besides one brother and one sister in Michigan, and one brother in Seattle, Washington. All the children were present at the funeral except Bessie, Ruth and Henry.
