WORCESTER -- David R. Tarkiainen, 63, of 5900 Old Ocean Blvd., Ocean Ridge, Fla., formerly of Worcester, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 in the Good Samaritan Medical Center, West Palm Beach, Fla., after an illness.
He left his wife, Harriet (Cohen) Tarkiainen; a son, Erik Tarkiainen of Holliston; a daughter, Lisa Steele of Chesapeake Bay, Va.; a stepdaughter, Jessica Israel of San Francisco; a stepson, David Israel of Lenox; a brother, Alan D. Tarkiainen of North Oxford; and two grandchildren. A brother, Daniel P. Tarkiainen, died in 1995. Another brother, Donald A. Tarkiainen, died March 10, 2003, just 9 days before David. He was born in Worcester, son of Natalie S. (Waskevich)Tarkiainen and Arvid A.Tarkiainen, and lived in the Worcester area for 56 years. He graduated from Commerce High School, and received a bachelor's degree from Worcester State College, a master's degree from Assumption College, and a Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki.
Mr. Tarkiainen was a social studies teacher at Wachusett Regional High School from 1962 to 1992. He then served as the dean of students at Wachusett from 1992 until his retirement in 1995. He was involved with a number of activities over the years, including acting roles in local theater productions, coaching Wachusett ice hockey, coaching Wachusett and American Legion Baseball Teams, and serving as a regional scout for the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. Burial was in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours were 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 23, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden (www.milesfuneralhome.com). Donations may be made to the Hospice by the Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486; or to a charity of choice.

God Bless you and your loving family. I'm your cousin Susan, Albin and Loretta Waskevich's daughter. I can remember going to your house and you coming to mine when I was very young but as life took it's twists and turns, I lost touch with all of you. I'm sorry for that, but look forward to the day when we meet again in Paradise. What a joyous reunion that will be!
