Robert Dale 'Bobby' Deevers, golf professional
Golf pro Robert Dale ''Bobby'' Deevers lived his life by a simple motto: ''Service to the game of a lifetime and the people who play it.''
He intended to continue living by that motto, even after an organ transplant two weeks ago when diabetes caused his kidney and pancreas to fail.
Mr. Deevers, 42, of Florence died at 10:05 a.m. Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
He had hoped to buy a golf course or driving range in partnership with his father, Dale Deevers of Orlando, Fla.
''That's all we talked about,'' Dale Deevers said. ''We'd say, 'If things get right, we could make some money and have some fun and be together.' ''
Bobby Deevers had most recently worked as golf manager for Dick's Sporting Goods in Florence after his kidneys deteriorated two years ago.
Previously, he had served in the more active position of golf pro for numerous clubs around the country. A Professional Golfers' Association professional, Mr. Deevers was a golf pro at the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Country Club, and served as the head pro at Cape Orlando Country Club in Orlando, Fla.; the Carroll, Iowa, Country Club; and the Leavenworth, Kan., Country Club. He served as golf director in Platte City, Mo.; in Las Cruces, N.M.; and Chillicothe, Mo.
Mr. Deevers missed working as a club pro because he enjoyed people and had a knack for teaching, his father said.
Mr. Deevers first met his wife, Julia Kessenich Deevers, on a golf course in Iowa.
They were married 14 years.
Besides his wife and father, survivors include a son, Nicklaus Robert Deevers, at home; a daughter, Suzanne Marie Deevers, at home; his mother, Alta Deevers of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister, Christine Davies of Minneapolis.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, Iowa.
Memorials are suggested to Deevers' Children, in care of Stith Funeral Home, 7500 U.S. High way 42, Florence, Ky. 41042.
