Residence Botetourt County; 17 years old.
Enlisted for the duration of the war on 3/6/1864 at Buchanan, VA., he was mustered into Botetourt Virginia Light Artillery as a Private.
Present on 10/31/1864 final Roll.
The Botetourt Light Artillery was organized with men from Botetourt County in May, 1861, as an infantry company. It was assigned to the 28th Regiment Virginia Infantry but in December transferred to the artillery. The unit soon moved west and was attached to the Department of East Tennessee and later the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It contained 43 men in January, 1863, and it was the only Virginia unit to be captured at Vicksburg. After being exchanged, it served in the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee where it was active in various conflicts. During April, 1865, the company disbanded.

- DEATH OF THE CLERK OF BOTETOURT. -
Mr. B.M. Allen, Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts of Botetourt, died about half past nine o'clock on the night of the 16th inst., at his residence in Fincastle. He was about thirty five years of age and leaves a wife and four children in comfortable circumstances, having by industry, and rare business tact accumulated considerable property.
He was a consistent and useful member of the Methodist church. Staunton Spectator, November 28, 1882.
