She was the illegitimate daughter of Albert, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein, a grandson of Queen Victoria. She changed her surname from Schwalb, the name of her foster family, to zu Schleswig-Holstein on May 12, 1931. 

She was married in Vienna on June 28, 1935 to Ernst Johann Wagner, but divorced him in 1938 and their marriage was annulled in 1940. A civil marriage took place on June 15, 1939 with Engelbert Charles, 10th Duc d'Arenberg, and after the annulment of her first marriage a religious ceremony took place on October 9, 1940. Both marriages were childless.
