While in England, WWI was declared and Neville enlisted in the British Army, making his way up to acting Captain by December 1916. He fought in both the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Messines. After the war ended, he returned to Australia.
He married Una Arnold (nee Woolf) at St Mark's Church of England, Darling Point in 1926. They had met two years previously in Sydney. They had just two children, a daughter Lorraine and son Malcolm, who went on to become Australia's 22nd Prime Minister.
