Frances Christine Fisher was born to a wealthy family in Salisbury, NC. She began her writing career in 1870 when the family fortune waned after the American Civil War and continued to publish until her death. She used the pen name Christian Reid to disguise her sex. Although she wrote 46 books her most well-known work is her tenth book "The Land of the Sky". The title gives the mountain region of North Carolina, and more specifically the city of Asheviile, NC, a nickname that endures to this day. While her early works take place in the United States after she married in 1887 she travelled extensively and used Mexico, the West Indies, and several European countries as settings. Her works include Valerie Aylme, The Land of the Sky, Daughter of Bohemia, The Picture of Las Cruses, and The Secret Bequest.
