President of Nicaragua. He served from March 1, 1875 to March 1, 1879. Prior to becoming president, he was mayor of the city of Granada in 1849. In 1862 he became a Senator for the Department of Granada. He also served as interim president for several months in 1869 and 1885 while the incumbents were off to war. He is best remembered for being the first Nicaraguan president to issue national treasury bonds to implement infrastructure projects. These included the first telegraph lines and construction of the Corinto-Chinandega railway. After leaving the presidency, he remained a powerful political force in Nicaraguan politics until his death.
