Adam was the son of Rev. Christian Henry Wengert and Elizabeth Ann Wood. He was a Bishop in the United Zion's Children Church, a small Christian denomination with roots in the Mennonite church. They are similar in doctrine and practice to the Brethren in Christ Church. A body that became known as River Brethren began about 1778 in Pennsylvania. They were a group of brethren near the Susquehanna River that had separated from the Mennonites. Groups of brethren were often named by their location, they were called River Brethren. The majority of churches descending from the River Brethren are known as the Brethren in Christ Church. When Bishop Matthias Brinser was excluded from the River Brethren in 1855, he organized his followers into a separate group, originally known as United Zion's Children. The church incorporated as United Zion Church in 1954.

He was married to Mary Spayd Kreider on November 2 1889. Mary and Adam were the parents of ten children, all linked below. Elda Light Wengert was expecting a baby when she died two days before her husband Paul. They were being cared for by Paul's mother Mary and several of his sisters, some of whom became sick as well.
