Edward Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, GCB, GCSI, GCIE, PC, was the son of Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, and Rosina Doyle Wheeler. He was an English statesman, Conservative politician, and poet. He served as Viceroy of India between 1876 and 1880 and as British Ambassador to France from 1887 to 1891. He was married on October 4, 1864 to Edith Villiers, the daughter of Edward Ernest Villiers (1806–1843) and his wife, Elizabeth Charlotte Liddell, and the granddaughter of the Hon. George Villiers, the youngest son of Thomas Villiers, 1st Earl of Clarendon.

His dplomatic career began with his appointment as Attache to Florence, then Paris, The Hague; then St Petersburg, Constantinople and Vienna. He was ppointed British Consul General at Belgrade in 1860.

Other diplomatic appointments followed in Europe then he was appointed Viceroy of India, 1876 -1880, and subsequently was appointed Ambassador to France, 1887-1891.
