George Afton Dies Suddenly in Buffalo

Well-known Dairyman Had Been Visiting Daughter When Taken

George Afton last member of one of the oldest pioneer families of Jefferson county, and well-known dairyman in this section, died suddenly Monday, December 2, 1946, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edith Bowman, in Buffalo, N.Y., where he had been visiting. His age was seventy-eight years, eleven months and six days.

Born December 27, 1867, he was the youngest son of Martin and Mary (Balmer) Afton, who resided near Panic in McCalmont township, The family moved to Rose township a few years later and it was here Mr. Afton resided during his entire lifetime.

Mr. Afton had owned and operated a dairy business catering to clientele in Brookville and surrounding area for many years. He had not been actively engaged in carrying on his business for the past several years. He suffered a stroke three years ago and since then has been in ill health.

On August 3, 1897, he was united in marriage with Clara Bridge, and to this union ten children were born. Two sons, James and Albert, preceded their father in death.

Surviving are his widow and four sons and four daughters: Mary, Anna, Olive, Daniel and Ambrose, at home; LeRoy and Philip, of Brookville, and Mrs. Edith Bowman, of Buffalo, N.Y. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home. Interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery.
