“Papaw Joe” was married to my paternal grandmother, Alma. As a young child, I very vaguely recall going with them to York, SC, where they wed.
He was gruff, intimidating, & larger-than-life. He was a hard worker, & in his younger years, followed in his father’s footsteps & had a hog farm. He had quite a green thumb, evidenced by a thriving garden & beautiful rose garden.
He was most proud of being a marine, in the Korean War—a “frozen chosen”—where he served under the command of Gen. Chesty Puller. He was actually bayoneted through the foot, during the Chosin River Basin conflict (a fact we only accidentally discovered a few days before his death).
Those he loved, he loved fiercely & unapologetically. He spent his last 3 1/2 years with his favorite granddaughter, her husband, & their children; & after a battle with heart disease & cancer, died at home surrounded by her & several other family members.
