Roger Marlin McGowen, 61 of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:55 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007 at his residence in Harrisburg.

Roger was born on March 3, 1946 in Decker, Ind., to the late Ira Herbert and Ruby (Burress) McGowen. He married Julia Ann Barter on Feb. 18, 1967, at the North America Baptist Church and she survives in Harrisburg.

Roger was Baptist by faith and attended the North America Baptist Church. Roger was a Vietnam Army veteran and served in Vietnam in 1966. Roger was a retired coal miner; he worked for Peabody Coal Company and most recently for Black Beauty.


Roger was a member of the Ainad Egyptian Shrine Club of Harrisburg; a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Harrisburg Masonic Lodge No. 325; the Men's Club of Eldorado; American Legion Post No. 167 of Harrisburg; and the United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1602.

Roger loved his grandbabies and his family was the biggest thing in his life. He was a collector of cards and various other memorabilia. Roger was a big St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was avid card player, deer hunter and loved to fish.

Roger is survived by his wife, Julia Ann McGowen of Harrisburg; three children, Rogiann Hansen and husband Michael of North Aurora, Samuel James McGowen and wife Terra of Harrisburg, Ryan Marlin McGowen and wife Brandi of Maryville; six grandchildren, Dakota James McGowen of Harrisburg, Makayla Dawn McGowen of Harrisburg, Sarah Julainn Hansen of North Aurora, Nolen Alexander Marlin McGowen of Maryville, Lydia Michelle Hansen of North Aurora, and Jillian Seol Hwa McGowen of Maryville; brothers and sisters, Wilma Hrabal of St. Louis, Mo., Ira Brent McGowen and wife Paula of Mount Vernon, Diane Seets of Princeton, Ind.; foster mother, Rosemary Reynolds; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.



Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Herbert and Ruby McGowen, Foster Father, Clifford James Reynolds, and his mother and father-in-law, Samuel and Juanita Barter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 at the Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Dale Martin and the Rev. Gaylon Parks will officiate. Burial will follow in North America Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 167 of Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at the Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge No. 325 of Harrisburg, and commence at 7 p.m.
