Bland, Bland Co., VA—Wednesday, 12 December 2018

SUGAR GROVE, Va.—Richard Daniel Alford, age 62, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

Richard was born in Sparta, N.C. to the late James Buddy and Mamie Bryant Alford. He was a loving husband, father and papaw. "Alford" as many called him, was the ultimate family man. When he wasn't working at General Dynamics, where he spent almost forty years, he could be found spending time with his family, fishing or collecting old cars. Mr. Alford's faith and church were very important in his life. He was a long-time, thirty plus years member of Mount Zion Temple in Marion where he was active in several ministries, especially taking care of and loving on the babies. He just loved people. To relax after work, he would often come home and help a neighbor with one of their projects around the house. He was an honest and hardworking man. Richard and his wife Brenda, of almost thirty-nine years, together raised a wonderful family who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Bell; and brother, William Alford.

Richard is survived by his wife, Brenda Perkins Alford of Sugar Grove, Va.; daughters, Monica Bowers and husband, Shawn, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Lauren Alford of Marion, Va.; sons, Brenton Alford and Zachary Alford, both of Sugar Grove, Va.; sisters, Joyce Alford of Ennice, N.C., Mary Howard and husband, Roy of Ormond Beach, Fla., Gloria Perrin and husband, Paul, of Washington, D.C., and Margie Kyle and husband, Stanley of Ennice, N.C.; brothers, John Alford and wife, Valerie, of Washington, D.C., James Alford and wife, Erika, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Bill Alford and wife, Ann, of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Xavier Bowers and Amelia Bowers; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel…. Burial will follow at Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove, Va…. Care for Richard's family has been entrusted to Seaver-Brown Funeral Service and Crematory, 237 East Main Street, Marion, VA 24354.
