Michael arrived in Vietnam 5 April 1969 and was assigned to the 1st Platoon of Alpha Company, 3rd Recon Battalion, 3rd Marine Division.
Michael died as a result of a hostile gunshot wound to the head from rifle fire during a patrol when they were engaged by hostile forces near the DMZ, 6 kilometers west southwest of Con Thien. Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division was sent to recover his body and lost 2 Marines when the 3rd Platoon was engaged by hostile forces.
