Lena Mae Abbott (known by friends and family as Mae or Maema) was born to James and Agnes Burch in Lake City, Fl and was raised in Jasper, FL. She often joked she was from Plumb Nelly….Plumb out of Georgia and Nelly out of Florida! She was a graduate of Jasper High School and Florida State University. She taught first grade and Specific Learning Disabilities at Richey Elementary School in New Port Richey, FL and later at Azalea Park Elementary School in Orlando, FL She has two children, Victor Alan Mallett and Vivian Lee Mallett Pozo (Joe Pozo), from her first marriage to Lester Mallett. In 1975, she married the love of her life and soul mate Doyle E. Abbott and her heart grew to encompass her love for step-children Hugh A. Abbott (Robbin Abbott) and Dennis E. Abbott (Dawn Abbott). Mae and Doyle were married for 36 joy filled years before his death in 2011. Mae and Doyle were known for their hospitality and loved to entertain their family and many friends at their home on Lake Down in Windermere, FL. She was an accomplished cook and served many meals that featured foods from their garden and fruit trees. They made many friends through the Tropical Fruit Club in Orlando and their property was often visited by people who came to enjoy whatever was blooming, growing or fruiting at the time. Mae was an expert seamstress and made beautiful clothing for herself, family and friends. She was a craftsperson who made drapes, bedspreads, pillows, wall hangings and would even upholster furniture. Her indomitable spirit was willing to tackle anything! Her comments and repartees were enjoyed by all. Her funny anecdotes and stories will be remembered fondly and sorely missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mae and Doyle traveled the world with friends and family. They loved to take the family on vacations where many memories were created. Their travels included numerous trips to Costa Rica where they made friends that became part of their extended “Tico” family. Mae moved to High Springs, FL in 2011 to live beside her beloved and loving daughter. She was comfortable in her home and would often say she had moved back toward her roots in North Florida. From her windows she enjoyed watching all the wildlife which would visit the property from neighboring O’Leno State Park. She still loved to cook and entertain family and her recipes will continue to be shared and enjoyed by family. In addition to her children, Lena Mae (MaeMa) is survived by grandchildren Jennifer Monath, Larissa DeDea, Brandon Abbott and Jarrett Abbott; great-grandchildren Nicole Griffin, Thomas Hayduk, Luna Abbott and Freya Abbott; and great-great-grandchildren Skyler, Josiah and Noah Griffin. She was the matriarch of 5 generations! She would laughingly say she was better than a grandmother…she was a GREAT, GREAT grandmother! There will be a celebration of her life and a tree planting ceremony to be held at her home in High Springs on Sunday, March 1st, 2020 at 1:00 PM. No flowers, instead for those wishing you can make a donation in her name to the Scleroderma Foundation at www.scleroderma.org
