Thomas Kuemper, age 76, of Bird Island died Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the Golden Living Center of Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation is Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the funeral home Wednesday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Thomas Kuemper was born May 28, 1931 on the family farm near Wilmont, MN to Joseph and Christina (Huschka) Kuemper. When he was young his family moved to Worthington where he attended school. Tom then moved to Bird Island to work in construction for M.J. Jacobs. Tom served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 in Korea with the 45th Infantry Division.
He was united in marriage to Patricia Bruns on April 14, 1952 at Worthington and they were the parents of six children. After his service time Tom returned to Bird Island where he worked for S.J. Jacobs. His construction career continued with Jacobs, Kuemper and Gaub, then Kuemper and Gaub and for the last many years, Kuemper, Inc. Tom sold his business and retired in 2006.
He truly enjoyed time spent in the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles. Tom loved music and played the organ, trumpet, accordion, harmonica and guitar. He had been a member of the Bird Island Lions for many years and was a member of the Bird Island American Legion and Olivia VFW. His Knights of Columbus membership included being a 3rd Degree member of the St. Anthony Council 2000 and 4th Degree member of the Archbishop Murray Assembly 538.
Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia, his five sons: John, Jim, Jerry, Mike and Ted; his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his two brothers: Ferdie and Francis; and his three sisters: Helena, Ann and Clare.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Carol, his grandson, Brian and his sister Isabelle Lumsden.
