Bertie Lee Roberts Rice, 93, formerly of 1223 Lower Flat Creek Road, died Friday, September 6, 2002 at a Columbus, Georgia Health Care Center following a period of declining health.

A native of Madison County. She had resided in Buncombe County since 1925. She retired in 1971 from Karlyn Shirt Factory after 27 years of service where she was a seamstress and was a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church.

Mrs. Rice was the daughter of the late Kelly William and Ibbie Martin Roberts and the wife of Furman Rice who died February 21, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Annie Mae Brown.

Surviving are her daughters, Clara M. Ruppert of Taylors, S.C., Wilma Ann Hopper of Richmond, Virginia and Martha Carolyn Sharpe of Alexander; son, Harley Dean Rice of Columbus, Georgia; nephew, Dedrick Brown of Mars Hill; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Hopkins and Rev. Tim Moore officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
