Viva Pearl Hicks, 98, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg.

Viva Pearl DeVries was born on April 15, 1909 at Aberdeen, SD to Cornelius and Maggie (Montgomery) DeVries. She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1928. In 1932 she was united in marriage to James F. Ginaven, and to this union two children were born. He died in 1947. In 1948 she married Arthur K. Marquette. He died in 1957. In 1961 she married DeForest J. Hicks. He died in 1988. She worked for many years at various jobs, retiring at the age of 80. She moved to Hurley, SD in 1991 to be near her daughter and in 1998 she moved into the Pioneer Villa at Viborg, SD. She has been a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home since 2000.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Annette Olson and her husband Jim, Hurley; 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine (Chet) Smith, Bedford, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a son and his wife, James W. and Marge Ginaven, and 7 brothers and sisters.
