I couldn't have asked God for a better child. Born at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro,North Carolina 2 months premature. She died 3 times on her way to Duke University. I rushed to see her with a camera in my hand. It wasn't something that I wanted to have on film. The nurse told me that if she had been born 10 years earlier she wouldn't make it. Her lungs weren't fully developed and they had her on a machine that expanded them. It was months before we could bring her home because she weighed 4lbs 14 oz and we had to wait until she weighed 5lbs. We would have to set an alarm for the 3 A.M. feeding because she couldn't cry, but she would be wide awake waiting. One day I came home and her mother was thumping her on the bottom of her feet. She said that she had to learn how to cry so her lungs would develop. She was 6 months behind in development but she eventually caught up.

Her mother and I divorced when she was 5 and I got custody. I didn't think about it at the time but she later joked that I always dressed her like a boy. I didn't think about dresses and other girly things which I now regret. She was a Tomboy and often played by herself. She liked to climb trees, play in the dirt, ride her bike and play school. I would hear her in her room and it sounded like she had a full class in there. She would teach, call on different students, she would get on to them for talking or chewing gum. I could tell that she was emulating her teacher. One day she came home and said a girl was picking on her. I told her to go back the next day and kick her butt or I would kick hers, I really wouldn't have kicked her butt but she she did kick the girls butt the next day and she was never bullied again until later in life and we all know how that turned out.

I would have sold my soul to the devil to help her but you can't help somebody if they don't let you know you they need it. I made her car, cell phone and insurance payments. She had full access to my bank. She had my debit card and 2 gas cards that she rarely used. She called me one day asking if she could get $20 to take the kids to the movies. I told her to take $100. Another time she asked for $80 so she could get the kids medicine, I told her to take $200. The point is that she didn't have to ask permission to get it but she always did. And she wouldn't ask for anything unless she was desperate. She didn't tell me everything that was going on because she was afraid that she would lose her daddy.
