Archibald Alexander Gordon was a true Scotsmen, a devoted husband, father of three children and grandfather of one, all of whom he outlived! He was the younger brother of William Eagleson Gordon V.C., who received his Victoria Cross during the Second Boer War. He also had two sisters, one stepbrother and a younger brother. Major Gordon married Lizzie Maude Smith/Gordon on 24 January 1892, and they received the twin William Hyde Eagleson and Archibald George Ramsay the year after. In 1896 they welcomed their third son Edmund Robert Adam. Major Gordon co-founded the 9th Volunteer Battalion Royal Scots and was commissioned a Captain on the 4th of August 1900, where he served as the first commander of A-Company. During his years as a Volunteer Officer, he got involved in the establishment of the Queen Victoria School in Dunblane. Later, he was promoted to Major and Brigade-Major in 1905. He resigned his commission on 26th May 1906 and moved to London to take up the duties of a Private Secretary to the 4th Duke of Wellington 'Arthur Wellesley'. At the First World War outbreak, Major Gordon was the organiser of the Belgian Relief Fund and brought the collected funds and goods personally to Antwerp to the Belgian government. During his visits, he was frequently summoned by the King of the Belgians. When the British Army didn't want to risk more ships crossing the Channel, Major Gordon became Colonel - Later General - Jack Seely's Orderly Officer. Together they surveyed the frontline and reported to the British and Belgian headquarters. Subsequently, they took part in the massive evacuation to Bruges and Ostend. The Belgian Foreign Ministry in England asked Major Gordon to fulfil a task for King Albert I in London. Afterwards, Major Gordon travelled to La Panne, where King Albert asked him to become the Belgian King's Messenger. Major Gordon accepted with great honour and enthusiasm and took part in establishing the great military hospital L'Océan at La Panne, commissioned by Queen Elisabeth. He became a well-known member of the Belgian Royal Household and carried out many duties for them until 1922.

Major Gordon is the writer of the book 'Culled from a Diary', which is a wonderfull document that describes his important life events from his childhood until 1939. The book was printed in 1941 by the publishers Oliver and Boyd. He also edited the book 'THE CHURCH OF THE MULTIPLYING OF THE LOAVES AND FISHES' in 1937.
