He joined the Royal Air Force on 17 April 1943, aged 21 years. He married Betty Winifred Auton in Marylebone, Middlesex, they had one daughter, Margaret who sadly never knew her Father as she was born after his death.
In the early hours of 1 June 1944, 115 Squadron took off from its base in Witchford, target Trappes West Railway Yards, France - 219 aircraft - 125 Lancasters, 86 Halifaxes, 8 Mosquitos. All groups except No. 5 Group successfully attacked the Railway Yards to the West of Paris.
Upon arriving in the drop zone the Bombers were chased by the German night fighters and four of the Lancasters were shot down, one of these was LL936 and the aircraft crashed east of Nogent-Le-Roi. All lives were lost including George Crumpier (Service No. 1464302).
