Joseph's father, Joseph P. Runyan, died as a Confederate Prisoner of War atPoint Lookout, Maryland. Joseph C. married Ellen L. Floyd in 1883 and they had 10 children, including Beveus Hall, Mary (Mamie) Unicy, Joseph W., Sally Lincoln (while a baby, Sally fell from a rocker into the fireplace and died), Oscar Langdon, Fletcher Fitzhugh, Anabell (Belle), Adolphus Craig, Claudie Odessa and George Ullan (George died at the age of seven).
