Library volunteer Louise Colgan Allen, 83, of Newtown Square, a library volunteer, died May 12 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Born in Donora, Pa., she lived in Philadelphia for three years before moving to the Wallingford section of Nether Providence, where she has resided for 55 years. She moved to White Horse Village in Newtown Square five years ago. She graduated with honors from Wilson College, where she was a biology-chemistry major. She took graduate courses at Penn State in Delaware County and at the Nature Center in Schuylkill Valley, Pa. Mrs. Allen was employed as a lab tech with Mellon Institute for two years and then at Philadelphia Serum Exchange for three years. She taught fourth grade in a Delaware County School District for six years. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Wallingford Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for 52 years at the Helen Kate Furness Library in Wallingford and was president of the board of directors for four years. She started playing golf at the age of 5 and was club champion at 19. Mrs. Allen was widow of Donald M. Allen. Survivors: Daughter, Amy L. Boyce of Chambersburg, Pa.; sons, Michael A. Allen of Kennett Square, David C. Allen of Media; sister, Jean Zehner of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren. Service and burial: Private. Contributions: Helen Kate Furness Free Library, 100 N.
