Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1966 to 1972), he was a pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he attended Mount Saint Joseph's High School, where he participated in baseball and football. Signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent, he made his Major League debut on September 15, 1966 with the Orioles' team who went on to win the World Series (1966). The following season (1967), he recorded 14 wins and received The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year for a Pitcher. Phoebus earned a place in the record books when he tossed a no-hit game against the Boston Red Sox (6-0) at Memorial Stadium on April 27, 1968. He produced a career high 15 wins and 193 strike outs in 1968. In 1969 he experienced an American League Pennant winning season with the Orioles and the following year (1970), he was a contributor to Baltimore's capturing the world championship. He was the winner of Game 2 of the 1970 World Series. In 201 career regular season games, he compiled a 56 win, 52 loss record with a lifetime 3.33 ERA, in 1,030 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked as a Physical Education teacher.
