Zimbabwe President. He served as the 2nd President of Zimbabwe from December 31, 1987 to November 21, 2017. He also served as the 1st Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from April 18, 1980 to December 31, 1987. Educated at both Kutama College and University of Fort Hare, he started as a teacher in Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, and Ghana. He grew increasingly angry that Southern Rhodesia was a colony of the British Empire and controlled by its white minority. This anger led him to embrace Marxism and joined African nationalist protests calling for an independent state led by representatives of the black majority. After making anti-government comments, he was convicted of sedition and imprisoned from 1964 to 1974. He fled to Mozambique after his release and became a leader in the Rhodesian Bush War, fighting Prime Minister Ian Smith's predominantly white government. He later reluctantly took part in negotiations, which resulted in the Lancaster House Agreement and ended the Rhodesian Bush War. In the 1980 general election, his party ,ZANU-PF, was victorious and he became the first prime minister of newly renamed Zimbabwe. He served in this position for seven years before succeeding Canaan Banana as President of Zimbabwe in 1987. He went on to serve as president for almost thirty years before being ousted in a coup and replaced by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. His rule grew increasingly dictatorial through the years and saw periods of famine and economic decline. His re-elections in 2002, 2008, and 2013 were filled with violence and election fraud.
