Smithfield – Harry William Wroten 100 formerly of Claremont passed away on Monday September 24 2012. Harry was a United States Coast Guard Licensed "Master" of steam ships unlimited tonnage and a First Class "Pilot" in Hampton Roads Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and was a professional navigator of the entire East Coast as well as the Intracoastal Water Way. He loved the ocean. He was the senior Docking Pilot/Tugboat Captain employed by McAllister Towing and Transportation Company for many years and was one of the original Tug Captains hired by McAllister as they began business in the Port of Hampton Roads in approximately 1951. There was nothing too big or too small afloat that Harry hadn't towed somewhere on the East Coast. Just to mention a few there was all of the tunnel sections 38 in all in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel all of the sections in the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel all of the fabricated sections of the Diamond Shoals Cape Hatteras Light Tower as well as the Chesapeake and Ambrose Light Towers in the Atlantic Ocean which ocean going ships used for their navigation. He was dispatched on many occasions to rescue distressed ships at sea in rough weather as well as tugs and barges in the Chesapeake Bay. Harry was considered and respected as one of the finest "Ship Handlers/Docking pilots" in Hampton Roads and was involved in handling the SS Manhattan which is the largest commercial ship ever built in the USA the NS Savannah which was the first nuclear powered cargo-passenger ship ever built in the USA not to mention the numerous large container ships and tankers. You name it and Harry had done it. He was frequently consulted by large engineering firms regarding projects they were involved within the harbor. He was the company's right hand man who was valued and highly respected confidant and was liked by his peers. Harry was involved in the Army Transport Services as a Lieutenant during World War II. He was a Christian who had been a member of Calvary Temple in Norfolk.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Jeanne W. Burell and her husband Donald S. Burell and Ruth "Missie" Smith and her husband Michael E. Smith; a son Charlie Wroten; a sister Ruth Snyder; granddaughters Lisa Lambert and Yvonne Greenside; step-grandchildren Lita Kvasnicka and Steven Wyatt and four great grandchildren

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday September 27 2012 at Woodlawn Memorial Park Norfolk. Friends and family may pay their respects to Harry on Wednesday at R.W. Baker & Co.
