Valerie was the eldest of seven children born to David and Aliette Dumas; w/o James O'Brien whom she married in 1974.

Valerie and her three brothers and three sisters grew up in Lisbon Falls, ME.

Valerie graduated from Lisbon High School class of 1970 and began studies at the University of Maine in Orono for plant and soil sciences that fall. She met James O'Brien of Reading, MA at school and after three years of courtship and the completion of her baccalaureate degree, Valerie and James were married in 1974. Three years later, while pursuing graduate studies in plant pathology at UMaine, their daughter Cristin was born. They settled in Glenburn and also had a son, Sean. Valerie completed her graduate studies in 1980 and spent time with the kids, doing the full time job of a stay-at-home parent. In addition to laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc., Valerie planned and maintained the vegetable and flower gardens that she loved, she spent hours preparing and canning the vegetables the gardens produced, and she was an avid seamstress, making clothes for herself and occasionally for the kids. She loved to cross-stitch, read mystery novels, and quilt. She was very creative and encouraged the kids to explore their own creative interests and talents.
Valerie went back to school in 1988 and completed Eastern Maine Medical Center's Medical Technology Program in 1991. She liked working in the lab and especially in blood bank.
Valerie was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 30 years and very much enjoyed the meetings and social activities with her sorority sisters.
Valerie was predeceased by her father and mother, and her grandson Jai.
She is survived by her sisters Debbie, Michelle and Stephanie, brothers Mark, Steven and Mike, her surviving grandchildren Robert, Giselle, Aditya and Amelia, her children Cristin and Sean, and especially by her husband of 43 years, Jim.
