William Stallings Newberry (Bill), died Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the age of 87.
Bill was born July 16, 1929 in Childress, Texas, the only child of William H Newberry and Florence Stallings. After high school graduation, Bill enrolled at Texas Tech University, obtaining a BBA. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corp and was wounded in Korea.
He married Jane Witcher in December of 1954 and they moved to Austin where she began her teaching career and he began his career with the Texas Highway Department. Bill was elected President of the Texas Public Employees Association in 1967, and retired in 1993. He and Jane joined Tarrytown Methodist Church in 1956 and have been active members ever since that time. Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting his entire life. After his children were born, Bill coached many little league baseball teams, timed numerous swim meets, and watched many dance recitals, McCallum football games, soccer and kickball games.
Bill was also an avid tennis player, enjoying many Monday evening matches with his Westwood group. After his grandchildren were born, Bill found himself back at the soccer games and kickball fields, although he keenly avoided any more dance recitals.
Bill followed his Red Raider teams, but also pulled for the Longhorns. Each Fall, on the Friday before the Red Raiders would play the Longhorns in Football, Bill would don his red and black Red Raider cape that he received in college, and pay a visit to his Longhorn family members. He loved his family deeply, and cherished large family gatherings, holiday celebrations and trips to his uncle's ranch in Driftwood. He loved the fact that two of his children and two of his grandchildren became Red Raiders.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill is survived by his wife, Jane, children Billy and Joanne Newberry of Austin, Jayne and Paul Haratsis of Ft. Worth, Nelson and Shiva Newberry of San Francisco, and Nancy and Neal Kieschnik of Austin. Bill is also survived by grandchildren Stephanie and David Dyer of Austin, Natalie and Matthew Perez of Round Rock, Madeline Haratsis of Lubbock and Heather Haratsis of Ft. Worth. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Weston Dyer.
The family would like to extend its thanks to Bill's many caregivers at Brookdale, as well as his in-home caregiver, Micheline.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin. The family requests that instead of flowers, donations in Bill's honor be made to the Endowment Fund of Tarrytown United Methodist Church or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
