Emma Ann Kennedy, the daughter of Thomas Walter Kennedy and Martha Dees, was born March 25, 1956 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina. She was the oldest of their ten children. Her family lived in Crawford County, Illinois before moving to Leavenworth, Kansas.

They later moved to Johnson County, Kansas where school teacher Emma Ann Kennedy married Herbert Lowery Marshall on November 6, 1879. They were the parents of George Walter (b. 27 Oct 1880), Emma Gertrude (b. 31 Dec 1881), Grace Lauretta (b. 16 Jul 1883), Mary Jane (b. 31 Aug 1885), and Conrad Herbert (b. 18 Jul 1890). Gertrude, Grace and Mary Jane all became school teachers.

The family moved to Fort Cobb, Oklahoma in 1902, where Herbert built a store for his general merchandize business. The family lived over the store until he built a house for the family about 1910. Herbert contracted to build houses, barns and store buildings from time to time.

The family belonged to the Methodist Church. Emma held many of the offices over the years. She liked to read her Bible and other good books. She had a lovely singing voice.

Emma loved flowers. She always made a garden of flowers where ever they lived. Her daughter Mary Jane Machen cared for Emma's beautiful garden in Fort Cobb after her death on June 2, 1936 at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 8 days. Emma was predeceased in death by her daughter Gertrude in 1934.
