Artist. Pioneer of kinetic optical art. He was born and studied in Caracas, Venezuela, but spent most of his life in Paris. His artwork used color, light and movement to create the illusion of a three dimensional object. His works can be found in museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London. Other notable art displays are huge murals at the Simón Bolívar airport in Caracas and the Dazzle Ship in Liverpool, where he adapted a camouflage used during World War I on a pilot ship at the Merseyside Maritime Museum . He studied at Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Aplicadas from 1940 to 1945 and worked as a magazine illustrator after graduation. He founded a visual arts school in Venezuela in 1957 and moved to Paris two years later to pursue art. He became a French citizen in 2008.
