Lt Col. USAAF Richard "Dick" Murray died at the age of 44 when the military aircraft he was flying near London England suffered a mechanical failure, and his parachute either never deployed or his copilot who is now deceased reportedly stated he saw Dick's parachute catch fire. He wasn't even supposed to be flying this training flight but agreed to do it when the pilot who was supposed to fly it could not/did not want to. Dick, who was planning to retire in October 1970, was survived by four daughters, their mother Alice (they wed Feb 16, 1946), his parents, sister Jean, uncle Dave Murray and other relatives. One of his daughters fondly recounts, "{Dad} was the nicest man, soft spoken, sweet-natured and generous-- could never say no to anyone who needed anything."
