Statesman, 5th President of Tunisia. He served as the 5th President of Tunisia from December 31, 2014 to July 25, 2019. Born Mohamed Beji Caid Essebsi, he first became involved in politics in 1941 when he joined the Neo Destour youth organization in Hamman-Lif. He later studied law in Paris and became a lawyer in 1952 at the Tunis bar, defending Neo Destour activists. He became a follower of Tunisia's post-independence leader Habib Bourguiba and later served as an advisor to Bourguiba. From 1957 to 1971, he served in various government posts before leaving the government in October of 1971. In 1981, he returned to the government to serve as foreign minister and served in this post until September of 1986. In 1987, he was appointed ambassador to Germany. He went on to serve as President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1990 to 1991. In 2011, he was appointed prime minister in the aftermath of the Tunisian Revolution, which brought down the government of Zine El Abedine Ben Ali. He served in this position from February 28, 2011 to December 24, 2011. He later founded the secular political party Nidaa Tounes and, was its presidential candidate in the country's first free presidential election in 2014. He was successful in the November election and went on to serve as president of Tunisia from December 31, 2014 to his passing.
