Bangladeshi Politician. He served as the President of Bangladesh from December 11, 1983 to December 6, 1990. He graduated from the University of Dhaka in 1950 and was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1952 from the Officers Training School in Kohat. He later served as an adjutant in the East Bengal regimental depot at Chittagong. He also completed advanced courses from the Command and Staff College in Quetta in 1966. After serving with a brigade in Sialkot, he was given command of the 3rd East Bengal Regiment in 1969 and the 7th East Bengal Regiment in 1971. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he was interned with other Bengali officers in West Pakistan and held as a prisoner of war. He was repatriated to the new nation of Bangladesh in 1973 after a treaty was signed between India and Pakistan. After his return, he was named Adjutant General of the Bangladesh Army by President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was later sent to India for advanced military studies at the National Defence University. In 1975, he became Deputy Chief of Army Staff and later served as Chief of Army Staff. In 1982, he took power after a bloodless coup ousted President Abdus Sattar, and after serving initially as Chief Martial Law Administrator, he served as president from 1983 to 1990. During his presidency, he pursued devolution reforms, privatized nationalized industries, and expanded the national highway system. Even with these achievements, he was seen as a military dictator. In 1990, he was forced to resign following a popular pro-democracy mass uprising led by Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina. He was later arrested and jailed the same year and held until being released in 1997. He continued to be involved in the nation's political scene until his passing.
