John also had an older brother, Nathaniel Birkinbine, b. 1848.
The 1900 US Census lists John Birkinbine (44) as a farmer living in Steinauer, Pawnee County, Nebraska, a widower with 11 children ranging in age from 19 to 1. John re-married on Feb 23, 1901 in Table Rock Village, Pawnee County, Nebraska to Mrs. Sarah S (Whitworth) Hack, whose husband William H Hack had also died in 1899.
John V Birkenbine (54) and Sarah S Birkenbine (51) were listed on the 1910 US Census living in Sherman, Gage County, Nebraska with 4 of John's 11 children and 2 of Sarah's 7 children on Apr 17, 1910. John's children were George H Birkinbine (19), Bessie C Birkinbine (15), Lassie (sic - should be Jessie) M Birkinbine (12) and Vera L Birkinbine (11).
