Ivar immigrated from Norway in 1939. He sailed from Bremen, Germany to New York on 28 August 1939. He was a student at the time. His immigration papers said he was born in Driva, but that was not an option in the FAG database. Driva is near or possibly a suburb of Oppdal.

At the time of the 1940 census, he was a student at E. M. College in Oronoko Township, Berrien County, Michigan . Later in 1940, when he registered for the draft, he was living in Angwin, California and attending Pacific Union College. His next of kin was listed as D. Eriesen. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. On 24 November 1943, he returned to the United States. He had been living in Rugby, England. His occupation was listed as teacher. His father's name was given as Knut Loe.

Ivar married Sylvia Joy Gregory 10 January 1945 in College Place, Walla Walla, Washington. She was from Oakland, Alameda, California. His profession was listed as Minister. On 7 December 1948, Ivar (34), Sylvia (23), Leif (2), and Ingrid (2) sailed from New York to Oslo. Their stay was listed as indefinite. In 1950, Ivar and Sylvia traveled from Norway to the United States with their two children, Leif and Ingrid, both age 3. They departed Oslo on 30 June 1950 and arrived in New York on 10 July 1950.

On 11 August 1968, he married Joyce Patricia Yarnell Worthington in Sacramento, California.
