He had been active in the wholesale and retail business for 52 years serving as a partner in the H. J. Dornbos Brothers business with a brother, Henry J., before selling to a son, Harold. The firm was nationally known as the largest smoker of whitefish chubs.
He was a member of the finance board of Calvin college for 30 years and elder of Grand Haven Second Christian Reformed church for 40 years, a member of the Grand Haven Christian school board for nearly 30 years, the last original member and for 45 years a director of the Grand Haven Peoples Savings Bank. He also served as vice president of the bank and on the Grand Haven Community Chest.
He was born May 2, 1877, in Groningen, The Netherlands to Luitjen Doornbos and Martje (Perdok) Doornbos and came to the United States at the age of 3. On June 18, 1903, he married Nellie Meeuwsen, of Zeeland.
He is survived by his widow; a son, Harold, Spring Lake; two daughters, Mrs. C.. Bierens, Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Edward Baas, Grand Haven and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2:30 Tuesday in Second Christian Reformed Church with burial in Lake Forest cemetery. The body is at the Kinkema funeral home.
