Dr. Robert Granger Wright (82) has gone off on what he described as his last great adventure with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit as he died peacefully in his home on Sunday May 19, 2019 after battling cancer.

Dr. Wright was born in Atwood, Kansas in 1937. He was active in 4-H and sports in high school, was part of the National Honor Society and president of student council the year he graduated, 1955.

Dr. Wright graduated in 1959 from what is now Fort Hays State University with a double major in English and Philosophy. He chose these majors thinking he would become a Methodist minister. He served 3 small churches in the Hays area but felt led to become a teacher instead. He received his MA in English from Fort Hays State in 1962.

While part of the Fort Hays Singers, he met Marthann Burris from Hays. They married in 1958 and had their first child, Jennifer in 1960 at Hadley Memorial in Hays. Marthann passed away in 1996.

Dr. Wright’s first teaching job was in Scott City, KS (1959-1962). He then taught high school in Lawrence, KS (1962-1966). His son Jeffrey G. Wright was born in Lawrence. Robert received his PhD. from the University of Kansas in 1973.

The family moved from Lawrence to Gainesville, Florida in 1971 where Dr. Wright taught at the University of Florida for 31 years in the College of Education. He left a legacy of over 400 fine English teachers throughout the nation.

He was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville. He served on various committees and was involved in groups including Chalice choir, Pathfinders Sunday School, Emmaus, and led a grief support group where he met his second wife, Susan Wright.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and first wife, Marthann. He is survived by his wife of almost 12 years Susan Wright, his children, Jennifer Wright Webb (Dan), his son Jeffrey G. Wright (Alison) and 3 grandchildren, Jaime, Dylan and Daniel Webb. He’ll be honored and remembered for his love of family, his faith, his excellent teaching, his love of music and his storytelling.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 25, 2019 at Trinity UMC in Gainesville, FL. Contributions or gifts in his honor can be made to: Fort Hays State University Endowment fund to the English, Philosophy, or Music Department
