Moses Hewitt was born In Indiana, the son of Israel Hewitt and Arah Jackson.

On 12 July 1860 Moses Hewitt married Charity Beaman. The had one son, James Hewitt.

The Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate soldiers attacked Fort Sumter, South Carolina.
On 10 August 1862 at Terre Haute, Indiana, Moses Hewitt and his brother-in-law, Alvin Beaman volunteered to serve in the Union Army. Moses was married to Alvin’s sister, Charity Beaman.
They were assigned the rank of Private in the 97th Indiana Infantry, Company B.

New Year's Day of 1863 found the two young men in the U. S. Union Army at Holly Springs, Mississippi.
A few days later, Moses wrote the following letter to his wife’s parents.

“Dear father an mother – I seat my self this morning to drop you A few line to inform you how we are getting along I fel as if I was lost I am sorrow to have to say to you that Alvin is ded he was taking on new years morning and that knigh A bout 12 oclock he died he was taking with a chill he died with a sinking chill we buried him desent as we could he receive your letter but did not git to answer hit”

Military Records show Alvin Beaman’s death as 01 January 1863, at about midnight.
Pvt Alvin Beaman was first buried at Holly Springs, Mississippi. At a later date, he was disinterred and buried at Corinth National Cemetery, Corinth, Mississippi.

Pvt Moses Hewitt - (1841–1863) died of Typhoid on 17 February 1863. He was first buried at LaGrange, Tennessee. He was later disinterred and buried at “Mississippi River National Cemetery” – the cemetery name was later changed to “Memphis National Cemetery”.
Sadly, as the soldiers were disinterred, chalk was used to identify each soldier. During the course of shipment, names were washed away by the weather. Thus, there are no individual markers for Moses and many other soldiers.
