SANFORD.
Died at the home of his son-in-law, Joseph Sibley, near Clarence, Mo., on the 18th day of July. 1886, Thos. S. Sanford, in the seventy first year of his age. Mr. Sanford was long a resident of Marion county, having come to it in 1839, and excepting a short residence in Lewis county, in nearly the same neighborhood, resided in it continuously until a few months ago.
He was born in Mercer county, Ky. Sept 28th, 1815; became a member of the Christian Church in early life, and lived a devoted Christian life. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Hutchinson Feb 11, 1841. Their son John B., a devoted and exemplary preacher of the Christian Church, died in Kirksville, Mo., a few days before his father's death.
Mrs. Sanford died Dec 23, 1845.
In the year 1846, he was married to Mrs. Keziah Emerson, daughter of Gerard and Elizabeth Banks, of Marion County. There are now living, of the issue of this marriage the following:
Gerard Banks, Alfred V. and Lynn, all successful teachers in California, one of them also a preacher. Lucullus residing on the home farm, which he owns and cultivates; Paul a graduate of the State Normal School at Kirksville, and a successful teacher; Silas a promising young physician of Marion county, a graduate of the Bellevieue Medical College of New York and Mrs. Ella Sibley, wife of Joseph Sibley, of Shelby county, formerly of Marion county. These are all devoted members of the church, and good citizens.
Mr. Sanford for many years was an officer in the Church at Emerson, was intrusted by his fellow citizens with responsible duties all of which he tried to discharge faithfully. He has one brother living and a sister, widow of Elder Eastham Ballenger, of Emerson Mo.
The remains were buried in the family lot, on the farm of Henry Banks near Emerson on the 20th of July 1886. The writer preaching a discourse suggested by the occasion.—E. C. BROWNING.
