Erik Louis Schmidt
It is with great sadness that the family and friends of Erik Louis Schmidt, longtime resident of Chicago and of Lowell, IN announce his passing on May 19, 2017 at the age of 73 after a long and brave fight with prostate cancer. Born June 12, 1943, to Thur and Jacqueline Schmidt, Erik grew up on the South Side of Chicago where he was introduced to automobiles by his dad who owned a collection of antique cars. Erik was immediately passionate about the vehicles and learned to drive at the age of 11. He had the innate hand-to-eye coordination, timing and talent to masterfully drive anything with a motor - usually at high speeds. In his late teens, he and his friend, Dick Messino, bought a 1957 Bel Air called “Shake, Rattle and Run” from the original owner, CB Cline. Dick was the mechanic and Erik was the driver. The two took the car around the country racing and winning for years. Erik always claimed that those were the best years of his life. The “57” has remained under the same ownership and is still raced today. Erik, with his caring personality, had the unique ability to make friends and keep in contact with them. Many of his friendships have lasted over 60 years. Erik is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon “Sharrie” Schmidt. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Schmidt (Kala Anders), his sister Deborah (Dan) Obiala, his companion, Melanie Haas Van Sickle, grandchildren Erika (Esteban) Canales and Anthony Schmidt, nieces and nephews and tons of friends of all ages. Visitation Tuesday 2-9pm at the Brady-Gill Funeral Home, 16600 S. Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park. Family and friends will meet on Wednesday morning 10:15am at the Bronswood Cemetery, 3805 Madison St. Oak Brook, IL 60523, for 10:30am graveside committal service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA. 90401 appreciated. (708) 614-9900 or www.bradygill.com
