He is still considered one of the greatest defensive ends in NFL history. Among his career accomplishments include eleven Pro-Bowl honors and seven time All-Pro recognition. He was a key member of two NFL Championship teams (1958 and 1959 Baltimore Colts). During the 1958 NFL Championship Game against the New York Giants (referred to as "The Greatest Game Ever Played") Marchetti suffered a broken leg following a crucial tackle. Born Gino John Marchetti, he attended Antioch High School in California and following graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army during World War II. He saw action during the "Battle of the Bulge" as a machine gunner. Upon his return home, he enrolled at San Francisco College where he played collegiate football. Selected by the Dallas Texans during the 2nd round of the 1952 NFL Draft, he totaled 161 career regular season games. After retiring from football, he became a successful businessman in the restaurant industry. "Gino's" became a recognizable fast food restaurant (hamburgers and fried chicken) during the 1960s and 1970s with more than 300 locations nationwide. Marchetti was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972. In addition to his business endeavors, he was involved with several charitable causes.
