James R. Prather, 86, of 1195 Greenhill Road, Eldorado, died 7 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at the Apostolic Church of Wasson with the Rev. Bob Prather officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery with military rites. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado and 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the church.

He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Eagle Creek to the late Hubert and Iola (Modglin) Prather. On Feb. 29, 1940, he married Revel Lee Brown, who preceded him in death on March 16, 1973. On Dec. 9, 1973, he married Libby Stevens, who preceded him in death on April 12, 1993.


He was a coal miner and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Wasson. He pastored in Grand Rapids, Mich., for 11 months and pastored Gospel Lighthouse Church in Russellville, Ky., for 20 years, had worked at Ford Motor Company as a supervisor for 14 years in Chicago Heights. He served in World War II in France, Germany, Poland and Belgium, and was training for the South Pacific when the war ended.

He is survived by a son, Robert Lee (Shirley) Prather of Eldorado; two daughters, Beth Ann Prather of Eldorado and Karen K. Rainwaters of Russellville, Ky.; four brothers, Thomas L. Prather of Raleigh, Billy Eugene "Bill" Prather of Raleigh, Willard "Wiggs" Prather of Raleigh and Lindell Ray Prather of Harrisburg; three sisters, Juanita Stevens of Raleigh, Bonita Gobin of Murphysboro and Oneda Furlong of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren, Renee (Mike) Stout of Carrier Mills, Jewell (Ron) Smith of Murphysboro, Ra Donna Prather of Eldorado, Jonathan (Christi) Prather of Wasson, Nathan (Rachael) Prather of Eldorado, Derek Rainwaters of Russellville, Ky., Karra Rainwaters of Russellville, Ky. and Katrina Rainwaters of Russellville, Ky.; eight great-grandchildren, Trent and Jawanna Smith, DaKota, Destanie, Devanie and Dawson Stout, Racquel Prather, Jonathan Prather; and a great-great-grandchild, Kaylee Ann Smith.

In addition to his parents and both wives, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert "Robbie" Prather on June 15, 1979; two brothers, Lowell "Cub" Prather and John Walter Prather; and a sister, Toledo Gobin.
