William W. Alberson was a World War I combat veteran, serving in Battery B, 119th Field Artillery Regiment from 1917 to 1919. The 119th was deployed to France in 1918, and was in continuous combat for five months supporting four American infantry divisions, the 28th, 32nd (Red Arrow), the 77th, and the 79th. When William was discharged from the U. S. Army in 1919 he was a Private First Class.

On 23 December 1920, William married Rhoda Bancum (1895 - 1984) in Muscogee County, Georgia. They had two children, Rhoda Earl (1924 - 1945) and Billie Jean (1929 - 2008).
