A lifetime resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Silas Andrew and Iva Louise Worley West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John West; one sister, Lois Stroupe and one grandchild, Brandy Caldwell. Howard enjoyed working in his shop at home and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He also loved camping, boating and fishing at Lake Chatuge. Howard was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and a United States Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Wanda West; six children, Marsha West Pucetas and Randy of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Deborah West Caldwell of Waynesville, James Howard West, Jr., Deborah Foster Warren, Linda Foster Gant and Terry, and Sandra Foster Noland and Todd, all of Canton; a sister, Edna Mae Bagley of Sumter, South Carolina; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019 prior to the service at Spring Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. with the Reverend Matt Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
