Cherokee Figure. Current scholarship suggests that she was born Quatie Elizabeth Brown, but little is known of her life before her marriage to Cherokee Chief John Ross. She had been married previously, however, and had a daughter. She and Ross were married about 1813 and had five children together. They owned one of the richest farms in north Georgia, some 200 acres, and other businesses. They were largely assimilated and owned a number of slaves. Between 1838 and 1839, approximately 17,000 Cherokees were forced from their traditional lands into exile in Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma). The Ross family was among 228 Cherokees who making up the last Trail of Tears group to leave their ancestral lands, traveling on the steamship Victoria. Mrs. Ross died on board shortly before the Victoria reached Little Rock.
